Philander McCarter Household in the
1840 Census of Grayson County, Virginia
The McCarter household lists:
1 male 30-40 (Philander)
1 female 30-40 (Thurza)
3 males under 5 (sons Levi, Martin V. B., and Andrew)
1 female under 5 (daughter Catherine)
In addition to four unknowns who were not slaves:
2 males 10-15
1 female 15-20
1 female 20-30
The household had one person employed in Agriculture, and one in Commerce. For almost two years (4 Feb 1837 - 9 May 1839) and (16 Jun 1840 - 3 Sep 1840) Philander was the Postmaster for Elk Creek. This fact, coupled with him being 'employed in commerce,' leads us to believe that he might have been running a general store at this time.
