Thurza McCarter Household in the
1870 Census of Ashe County, North Carolina
At the end of the Civil War, the McCarters moved just over the state line to Ashe County, North Carolina. Philander died in early 1870, so doesn't appear in this census.
The McCarter household consisted of Thurza 62, Andrew 30, Emily 24, James 22, George 18, Elbert 6 (Emily's son), and Phany who was likely their former slave who had stayed on as a servant.
Andrew, James, and George were working the farm which was valued at $3,000. Their personal property was valued at $800. Andrew and James were listed as "males eligible to vote." Elbert had not attended school that year, and Phany was blind and unable to read or write.
